Talking to a neurosurgery resident changed my view on BCI safety standards

Last week I was at a friend's BBQ and got talking to a guy who's finishing his neurosurgery residency at UCLA. I brought up the usual consumer BCI stuff like headbands and implants. He just looked at me and said "you know we still don't know what happens when a device sits in someone's brain for 30 years." That really hit me. I've been so focused on the cool tech and possible uses I never stopped to think about long term effects. Has anyone here looked into the FDA's process for approving these things?

FDA only approved the first BCI implant in 2016 really...

I always thought BCI was much older tech, but learning it's only been 8 years really puts things in perspective.
