Which matters more for brain-computer interface accuracy: electrode placement or signal processing algorithms?

I tried two different BCI setups at a demo last week: one with precise EEG cap placement but basic filtering, and another with sloppy electrode positioning but fancy AI noise cancellation. The sloppy one actually performed way better at reading my intent to move a cursor. Does the community think we are overvaluing hardware precision over software smarts?

Hold on, wait. The sloppy electrode cap with the fancy software actually beat the precise placement one? That sounds backwards but I guess it proves the algorithms are doing the heavy lifting.

Wait, the sloppy setup actually outperformed the precise one?

Honestly, doesn't the quicker, sloppy one just get the same job done faster?
