Found out the hard way why you should wet your bricks before laying in hot weather...

I was laying a garden wall in Phoenix last July and my mortar was drying out before I could even comb it. Started dipping each brick in a bucket of water first and the bond held way better... no more dusting the next day. Has anyone else had luck with that on big jobs?

Is it really that hot in Phoenix? I was out in Vegas last summer doing a small patio and my water hose actually started steaming in the sun. I tried soaking bricks too but ran into a different problem. The water made them so heavy I think I pulled something in my back by the third row. Ended up just working at sunrise and quitting by 10am, which turned out better because I could grab tacos before the lunch rush.

@emerychen yeah Phoenix is a whole different beast. Switched to spraying down materials with a mist instead of soaking - keeps em cool without adding all that weight.
