Hot take: I think the whole 'mud vs. pre-mix' debate for repointing a 1920s chimney in Albany comes down to the weather you're working in.

Had a sudden downpour hit my fresh lime mortar mix last fall, washing out half the joints before I could even grab a tarp, so now I'm curious if anyone else has a hard rule for when to switch to bagged stuff.

My Albany chimney project got rained out twice last fall. I now check the hourly forecast like a nervous pilot and just grab the bagged mix if there's a cloud within ten miles. It's the only way my joints survive my own bad timing.

My last patio project got washed out three times in April. I started trusting weather apps less than my creaky knees. Now I just assume rain and buy the pre-mixed bags to save my sanity.

Totally get that pilot checking the radar feeling. My shed base turned into a mud pit after two surprise showers last spring. Switched to bagged mix for the whole job and it saved what was left of my schedule. The extra cost hurt a bit, but way less than redoing sloppy work. Sometimes you just have to buy back your own peace of mind.
