Hot take: switched to a 5/8 inch tuckpointing trowel and my joints came out worse
Did a repoint on a 1930s brick chimney in Baltimore last month and the mortar kept smearing instead of sitting clean, turns out the blade was too stiff for the lime mix I was running. Anyone else run into this or should I just go back to my old 1/2 inch?

That "too stiff for the lime mix" part is the whole ballgame, softer blades give the mortar somewhere to go instead of smearing.
