I thought using a laser level for a simple garden wall was overkill, but my buddy in Spokane proved me wrong.

Totally get that. My neighbor did the same thing for a fence and it was a game changer.

Remember what janac59 said about the fence. That's the same deal, it's not just about being straight up and down. A laser shows you the slope of the ground too, so you can step the blocks right and keep your courses level. Makes the whole build way more solid from the start.
