Unpopular opinion: brick ties matter more than most guys think

Last Tuesday I was working on a retaining wall in Austin and the inspector flagged my spacing because I had them every 16 inches instead of 12. I double checked my math and the wind loads in that area were way higher than I thought. Has anyone else had an inspector make them add more ties on an existing wall?

118 mph design wind speed in my county. Checked my IRC book after the same thing happened to me on a porch knee wall. The inspector was right. 12 inch spacing is code for any wall over 7 feet tall in high wind zones. I had to pull out half my ties and redo them. Total pain but better than the wall failing down the road.

Did you have to take out all the old ties clean or could you leave some in and just add the extras? Also did the inspector make you redo the whole wall or just the tie spacing?
