A small diner in Flagstaff changed how I pack for road trips

I was stopped at a little place called Galaxy Diner on Route 66 last month. The waitress mentioned she always brings a reusable water bottle and a roll of duct tape on long drives after her car overheated in the desert. That got me thinking about all the money I waste on bottled water and emergency purchases. Has anyone else found clever everyday items that save you cash when traveling?

I mean, a roll of duct tape and a reusable water bottle? That's pretty basic stuff. I've been driving for 25 years and never needed duct tape for anything on the road. If your car overheats in the desert, duct tape isn't going to fix a blown hose or a leaky radiator. You'd need actual coolant or a tow truck. And a reusable bottle is fine, sure, but you're saving what, maybe three bucks a trip if you're driving through Arizona in the summer? Seems like a lot of fuss over something that's not really a game changer.
