Am I the only one who thinks travel rewards cards are a total trap for regular people?
My sister in law cornered me at a birthday party in Tulsa last weekend and spent 20 minutes bragging about how she flew her whole family to Orlando for free using points. I asked what she spent to get those points and she got real quiet. Turns out she ran about $4,200 through a card with a $95 yearly fee just to cover a $600 flight, and she carried a balance two of those months at 24% interest. I did the math on a napkin and she basically paid $780 for a "free" trip. Here is my thing: most of us do not spend enough or travel enough to beat the fee, the interest, or the hit to our credit. I have saved more by flying Tuesday mornings on a budget airline and packing sandwiches than any card ever gave me back. So tell me, has anyone here actually come out ahead on points without changing how they spend, or is it just a game for people who already had the money?
