Found a $9 train trick for Portuguese coastal towns last month

I was trying to hit Nazare and Peniche from Lisbon without renting a car and kept seeing $70 tour prices, then a local at the Rossio station showed me the regional train to Caldas da Rainha plus the connecting bus for under $9 total. It took an extra hour but the route hugged the coast with crazy good views, and I saved enough for two pastel de nata stops. Has anyone else found cheap rail and bus combos that beat the packaged tours in Europe?
