Hit 50 flights in 6 months and it changed my packing game

I flew 50 times on budget airlines in half a year. Southwest and Spirit mostly. That's when I realized paying $40 for a checked bag 50 times is $2000. Now I fit everything in a personal item bag every single trip. Anyone else stop checking bags after they did the math?

Used to think you were crazy if you packed light for a real trip. I was the guy bringing a full suitcase for a weekend. Then I had a Southwest flight get delayed and they made me gate check my bag. Waited 45 minutes at baggage claim for something I carried onto the plane. That did it for me. Now I cram everything into a backpack. Underwear in the bottom, shoes sideways, toiletries in a ziplock. Saves me time and money every single time.
