Hot take: That $12 mosquito net I bought for Thailand was a complete waste
I spent $12 on a mosquito net before my trip to Chiang Mai last summer, thinking it would save me from bites and hotel costs. But the thing was so flimsy it tore on the first night, and the hostel already had built-in nets anyway. The money would have been better spent on a decent repellent that actually worked. Has anyone else fallen for gear that sounded smart but just added weight to your bag?

Wait, aren't most Thai hostels already set up with mosquito nets?

Not really, lol. A lot of the budget hostels will have them but plenty of the mid range places skip them because they think the screens on the windows are enough. The screens are usually full of holes anyway from years of wear. I swear I got eaten alive at a spot in Chiang Mai last year that swore they had mosquito protection but didn't have a single net over the beds. Better to just bring your own cheap one from home and not gamble on it. Saves you from waking up covered in bites.
