Houston to Chicago flights doubled in price since last summer - what happened?
I flew from Houston to Chicago three times last summer for around $120 round trip each time. Looking at the same route now and it's hitting $280 easy on basic economy. Did Spirit and Frontier just decide to stop running cheap routes? Has anyone else seen this jump on specific city pairs lately?

The oil refinery idea is worth looking into, but I think the bigger issue is that both Spirit and Frontier have been cutting a ton of their routes out of Houston lately. I usually fly out of Hobby and noticed they pulled back on a lot of the short haul stuff to focus on longer routes where they can charge more. Have you checked if Southwest is any cheaper for those dates? They seem to be holding steady on some of the Texas to Midwest routes, at least for now.
