I finally saw the point of a travel day pack after a chat with a hostel owner in Lisbon

I was in Lisbon last fall, trying to stuff my big backpack into a tiny hostel locker. The owner, Maria, laughed and said, 'You are still carrying your whole house on your back for a day out? That is 8 kilos of stress.' She showed me her system: a cheap 20-liter pack she folds into her main bag. She only carries a water bottle, a jacket, and her wallet for daily sightseeing. It hit different because I was always that guy lugging everything, getting tired by noon. Now I leave the big bag locked up and just take the small one. Anyone else have a simple switch like that that made a trip way easier?

Well... some of us just like having our stuff with us.

@the_ruby I feel this on a spiritual level. My backpack is basically a museum of 'what if I need this' artifacts from the past five years. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather be the person with the mystery 50-pound bag than the one who forgot their snacks.

Why did it take a hostel owner to teach us how to pack light?
