I started using the ground floor lockers at hostels instead of my room and cut my theft risk to basically zero
Three months ago in Medellin my room got broken into while I was asleep and they took my camera and $200 in cash. After that I started asking at check-in if they have lockers outside the dorm, and almost every hostel does, usually free or a dollar a day. Last week in Lisbon the guy next to me lost his laptop from his bed while he was in the shower, and mine was in the front desk cage the whole time. I have paid maybe $15 total in locker fees across 6 hostels since and haven't lost a single thing. The catch is you have to plan your day around the front desk hours, which bugs some people. Does anyone else do this or am I just paranoid now?
Same thing happens with bikes in cities. You don't leave a $900 bike locked with a $20 cable lock and hope for the best, you use the good lock and a rack with people around. Hostels are the same deal, the room is the cable lock and the front desk cage is the good lock. Paying a buck a day to not lose a laptop is just math.
