I swore by hostels until a 45 euro night in a Lisbon guesthouse changed my mind

I used to think hostels were the only way to keep travel cheap, you know, shared dorms and all that. Then I tried a private room in a small guesthouse in Alfama for 45 euros a night, which included free breakfast and a kitchen. The quiet let me actually sleep through the night, and I saved on eating out by making my own sandwiches for lunch. Total cost was maybe 10 euros more per day than a hostel, but the peace of mind was worth it. Anyone else out there found a happy medium between hostels and hotels?

@gavincampbell nailed it. That 10 bucks is basically the cost of a coffee and a pastry in most places now. I had a similar moment in Barcelona where I paid 50 euros for a tiny private room near the beach. Zero regrets. Sleeping without someone snoring two feet away is worth every single penny.

Honestly that 10 euros extra is nothing for actual sleep.
