I swore hostel dorms were a scam until I hit 41 nights and ran the math

For two years I paid for private rooms because I figured saving $12 a night wasn't worth the snoring. Last month in Medellin I added it all up and realized the dorm route would've kept $1,640 in my pocket, which is basically a free flight to Bangkok. Anyone else run the numbers and get surprised by how fast the small stuff stacks up?
