I used to think hostels were only for college kids until I stayed at one in Lisbon at 45
Booked a private room at the Independente in Lisbon for 30 euros a night versus 110 for a basic hotel, and I got free walking tours, a communal kitchen, and met interesting people my own age. Has anyone else found a hostel that changed their mind about them?

Exactly this. I did the same thing in Barcelona last spring, 35 a night for a private room with this beautiful rooftop terrace. Met a retired couple from Canada who were on a six month trip, totally changed my view on who stays at hostels. Feels like you get way more character for your money than a boring hotel room.

Yeah I was honestly the same way. Thought hostels were just for backpackers in their 20s until I crashed at one in Porto last year. Private room was cheaper than any hotel and honestly the common areas were way more relaxed than I expected. Changed my whole view on them.
