My hostel locker broke in Barcelona at 2am
I had all my cash and passport stuck inside at 3am in this tiny hostel near La Rambla, ended up using a bobby pin to jimmy the lock open after watching three YouTube tutorials on my phone, has anyone else had to break into their own stuff while traveling?

Oh man. My friend did this in Prague. Used a credit card. Took forever.

Wait, you used to think credit cards were the way to go for international travel too? I was the same way until my buddy got hit with those foreign fees and it took months to sort out the charges. Definitely changed my mind about cash being better for stuff like this.

Oh man, that brings back bad memories (and I totally get your pain with that locker situation). I used to think cash was king for travel too, but after getting pickpocketed in Madrid I switched to credit cards exclusively. Then my wallet got locked in a hostel safe in Lisbon at like 1am and I had to break the hinges off with a butter knife to get it out. @grant728's story about his buddy's fees actually hit home because I never considered how much the card companies can screw you if you're stuck without cash for days. Now I split it up - some cash hidden in my shoe, a card in the hostel locker, and another card taped to the back of my phone case. Learned that lesson the hard way, believe me.
