Overheard a guy at the airport gate talking about hostel dorm secrets

I was waiting for a delayed flight in Denver last month and this older traveler was telling his friend he only books hostels with lockers big enough for his backpack, then uses a cable lock through the zippers. Said he's saved over $200 this year just by skipping private rooms and eating the free breakfast twice. Made me rethink my whole hotel habit, especially for short city trips. Do you guys always check locker size before booking a dorm bed?
