Unpopular opinion: airport lounges are a waste of money for budget travelers

Last month I paid $55 for a day pass at a lounge in Charlotte during a 4 hour layover. I got a sad sandwich, some cheesy crackers, and a window seat that overlooked the runway. My buddy who stayed in the terminal ate at a Shake Shack for $12 and got a better meal. Unless you're flying 10 times a month, that fee eats up a whole night of hostel stay somewhere cool. Has anyone else found lounges overrated, or am I just picking the wrong ones?
