I used to write down every single purchase in a notebook, now I use a free app and my grocery bill dropped $60 a month
For about 3 years I carried a little spiral notebook in my back pocket and wrote down every dollar I spent. It worked okay but I would forget to log stuff for days and then guess, so my numbers were always a bit off. Last August my wife showed me a free budgeting app on my phone and I figured it would be the same mess. Turns out the difference was that the app pulls in my card purchases on its own, so nothing gets missed. After 4 months of using it I noticed I was spending about $60 less on groceries each month just because I could actually see where it was going. The notebook was better for the feeling of writing things down, but the app wins for being honest with me. I still keep the notebook in my truck for cash tips though. Anyone else find that tracking got easier once they stopped doing it by hand?
Did your wife ever get annoyed when you double tracked stuff with the notebook and the app? A buddy of mine did the same thing and his card statements showed he was dropping like $80 a month on gas station snacks he never remembered buying. Seeing it laid out without having to write it down himself was what finally got him to cut back.
