My car's AC died right before a road trip to Phoenix and I had to get creative
I was packing for a family trip to Phoenix last month when my car's AC just blew hot air. The quote from the shop was $1,200 to fix it, which would have wiped out our whole trip fund. I was panicking because it was already over 100 degrees there. I ended up watching a bunch of YouTube videos and found out it might just be the relay switch. I bought the part for $18 at an auto store, popped the old one out from under the hood, and plugged the new one in. The cold air came back on instantly. I felt like a genius and saved us over a grand. Has anyone else fixed a big car problem with a cheap part instead of a huge repair bill?

But what if it's actually something worse?

Nice. I had a similar win when my power windows stopped working. The shop wanted $500 to replace the whole switch panel. I found a forum post saying to clean the contacts with electrical cleaner. A $7 can of spray later and they worked perfectly. It's crazy how often it's just one little thing.
