My neighbor said she 'doesn't believe in budgets' and it blew my mind

She told me this at our building's mailboxes, saying she just spends what she feels like... I looked at my own chart and saw I saved $400 last month by planning meals. That's real money, not a feeling. How can anyone think a budget is just a made-up thing?

My cousin tried the no-budget life for a year and ended up with a maxed-out credit card from too many "feel like it" Target trips. I tried to wing it with groceries once and spent like $200 on fancy cheese and crackers alone, which is a hilarious way to blow a week's food money. Having a rough plan for my cash means I can actually afford to fix my car when it makes that weird noise. Your neighbor's approach sounds like a fast track to eating ramen for a month straight.

That "rough plan" idea sounds stressful to me, like another chore. I get what angela_king39 is saying about the Target trips, but for me, winging it works. I just check my bank app before I shop. If I see I have money, I buy the fancy cheese. If I don't, I get the regular stuff. It keeps me from stressing over every single dollar and I still pay my bills.

That "fast track to eating ramen" line is exactly what my finance podcast said happens.
