Nearly blew my budget last month on a 'deal' I almost fell for

Last month I was scrolling through deals online and saw a new grill marked down 60% at a big box store in Phoenix. I almost bought it on the spot because the discount looked insane. But I stopped myself and checked the same model at three other stores first. Turns out the original price was inflated by $200 just to make the sale look better. The real price was only about $30 less than what everyone else sells it for. I dodged a $400 mistake because I took 20 minutes to compare. Has anyone else caught stores pulling that fake markdown trick on appliances or furniture?

oh man that grill thing is so real. I had a similar thing happen with a couch at a furniture store in Scottsdale last year. They had a big banner saying 50% off but when I checked the tag closer the "original" price was something like $2,800 which I knew was way too high. I found the exact same couch online for $1,400 regular price. So their "sale" price was $1,400 too, which meant I wasn't saving a single dollar. The sad part is I still almost bought it because the store had that fake urgency vibe with the sale ending in two days.

Did you end up checking the fine print on their "sale ending" date too?
