Picked the wrong tree removal quote to save $50

Last spring I had two quotes to take down a dying oak in my backyard. One guy was $600 and the other was $650. I went with the $600 guy because I figured a tree is a tree. He showed up with one guy, no chipper, and spent 8 hours hacking branches into pieces I had to haul myself. The $650 crew would have had it done in 3 hours with a crew of 4 and left it spotless. I ended up spending $80 on dump fees plus a full Saturday of my time. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way with service quotes?

Is it really that big of a deal though? I've seen guys make a mess of way worse jobs and still get paid full price. Maybe your buddy just got a little too stressed out over something that's pretty common.
