Talking to my dad about his old checkbook made me rethink my spending

My dad visited last weekend and showed me his checkbook register from 1985. He had every single expense written down by hand, even a $0.75 cup of coffee. Made me realize how much I just swipe my card and never think about where the money goes. I started tracking every dollar in a notebook this week and already found $60 in small stuff I didn't need. Has anyone else gone back to pen and paper for budgeting?

I mean a notebook does sound like a lot of work for a cup of coffee from decades ago. Is it really that deep or just your dad being extra organized?
