The $47 grocery receipt that started a fight in my house

I used to plan meals around what was on sale, but my partner hated it because we ate the same five things every week. Then I tried the opposite approach for 2 months, just buying what we actually craved and cooking from that. Our grocery bill went up about $47 a week at first, but the takeout spending dropped by almost $150, because we stopped ordering out when the fridge felt boring. Now I'm wondering if the real win is flexibility over strict structure, or if we just got lucky with our habits shifting. My buddy in Austin swears by a zero-fun strict list and says my method is chaos with extra steps. Has anyone else seen their budget balance change when they loosened the rules instead of tightening them? I'm genuinely torn on which side to commit to going forward.
