A whole news site in Venezuela vanished for 3 days, then came back with no explanation
Got tipped off by a buddy who still has family in Caracas. He checked his usual news app on Monday and it was just gone, not blocked, not slow, just missing from the app store and the site wouldn't load from any server. By Thursday it was back up like nothing happened, no apology, no statement. I tried to find any coverage of it in English and got nothing, which made me wonder if that's the point. Has anyone else seen a news outlet just vanish like that and then pretend it never happened?

My buddy had something similar happen with a small alt-weekly in Chicago back in 2017. The whole site just went dark for two days, right before they were supposed to publish a big story about a local alderman's shady real estate deals. When it came back, that story was gone and they ran a piece about pumpkin spice lattes instead. He still swears someone in city hall made a phone call, but the editors never said a word about it. Makes you wonder what kind of pressure gets applied to make a newsroom just pretend a whole thing never existed.

Pumpkin spice lattes, the ultimate cover story for corruption. Nothing says "we definitely didn't kill a story about shady real estate" like a beverage that tastes like potpourri. Probably the same guy who decided the best way to hide a leaked memo is to drop a story about a cat that learned to play the piano. At this point, I'm surprised they don't just run a piece about whether ghosts can get sunburned when they need to bury something. Your buddy's right to be paranoid, but at least the alderman got his coffee fix.
