I finally figured out why half the Sudan clips on my feed have no date or city in the caption
I started keeping a text file of every Sudan video I could find from April 2023 onward, and 6 out of 10 had no dateline, no city, just "Sudan" and a crying emoji. That matters because a clip from El Geneina in June and one from Khartoum in April can look identical in a 12 second vertical video, and people argue in the replies over which one it is. I only caught on after a friend in Nairobi sent me the same clip twice with two different captions. Anyone else notice how fast the location tags get stripped when stuff gets reposted?
Man, 6 out of 10 isn't quite the full picture. The tags get stripped way more than that once a clip leaves its first upload. A lot of the pages reposting this stuff are farming views, so they scrub anything specific on purpose since a vague caption pulls in more people. And when footage gets pulled off Telegram or WhatsApp first before it ever hits a big platform, the date and city are usually gone before it's even posted. That said, you're right about the Nairobi thing, because the same clip bouncing around with two different captions is the tell. Once you've seen that happen, you can't unsee it and every repost starts looking suspect.
