I used to think censorship stories were overblown until I saw the Turkish newsstand in Kreuzberg
Last month I was in Berlin and wandered into a little Turkish market in Kreuzberg where the owner had two stacks of newspapers side by side, one in German and one in Turkish. Same day, same story about the protests in Istanbul, but the German paper had 4 paragraphs and the Turkish one had almost a full page with names and quotes I never saw anywhere else. The owner just shrugged and said the Turkish editions get pulled from the shelves back home, so his cousin mails them to him. I always figured "buried headlines" was an exaggeration, but now I check foreign papers first when something big happens. Anyone here know other cities where you can find the unfiltered versions like that?
Sounds like a cool story but honestly that kind of thing happens with every country's foreign press. Papers always write more for their own people, it's not some big cover up. Plus a random market owner telling you his cousin mails them is a nice story but hardly proof of anything.
