I used to think the story about the 2019 water protests in Kazakhstan was just local politics, but a friend from Almaty showed me how much was cut from international reports.
After comparing the full Almaty news feed from that week with the single paragraph in my usual news app, I realized they left out the police pay dispute that started the whole thing, so what other big stories are we missing because they get trimmed down for us?

That "kindergarten version" line hits home. I started setting Google News alerts for the city names involved in stories, not just the country. The local reporting that pops up fills in those missing pieces, like which union actually called the strike.

Oh man, "trimmed down for us" is putting it nicely. It's more like they run the whole story through a paper shredder and then hand us two random pieces. Makes you wonder what else we're getting the kindergarten version of.

Start watching the BBC World Service for things like this. Way different picture than what we get stateside.
