Why I started writing down every job detail after a costly mix-up

I always figured that with my landscaping regulars, we could just talk it out and keep things loose. Then one client insisted I promised to reseed their entire lawn for the basic mowing price, and I had zero proof otherwise. Losing that money hurt, but it made me realize how fuzzy memories can get. Now I jot down notes and get a quick sign-off before starting any work, even for people I know well. It just keeps everything clear and fair for both sides.

My uncle ran a small painting crew and had a similar thing happen with a kitchen cabinet job. The homeowner swore they agreed on a specific high-end paint, but my uncle only wrote down the color name, not the brand. That mistake cost him almost his whole profit on that room because he had to repaint it.

My buddy Nate does handyman work and got totally burned last year. He gave a verbal quote for trimming some branches, but the client later claimed he promised to remove a whole pine tree for the same price. It turned into a total mess with the guy refusing to pay the full amount. Nate didn't have a single note or text to back himself up, so he just ate the cost. He fights about it for weeks lol. Now he writes everything on a carbon copy form before he even picks up a tool.

That's why @elizabeth_perry, everything needs a paper trail now.
