Old guy at the Boise market showed me a better way to sharpen my boning knife

I was working a stall at the Saturday farmers market last fall and this retired butcher named Frank stopped by. He watched me struggle for a minute, then said, 'Kid, you're using too much angle. Drop your wrist and use the stone like you're shaving it, not grinding it.' He took my knife and showed me on my own 1000-grit stone, and the edge was way better in half the time. Anyone else get a game-changing tip from an old-timer in a random spot?

Maybe it's just me, but I get what you mean about it not being life changing. It's more like those little moments that just stick with you. You learn one small thing the right way, and then you do it that way forever. It's not about the knife, it's about that feeling when someone just passes on a bit of knowledge for no reason. Makes the world feel a bit nicer, idk.

Honestly, that's cool and all, but it's just a knife sharpening tip. Not exactly life changing advice.

What makes something life changing to you then?
