Appreciation post: the old timer in Tacoma who showed me to cut drawer runners long and trim after
Three years back I was building a run of 12 maple drawers in my garage and every single one racked when I slid it in, and I was ready to blame my table saw. An old cabinetmaker down in Tacoma took one look and told me to cut the runners a quarter inch long and trim them to fit after the box was glued up, not before. I've done it his way since and I think I've only had one drawer bind, so how do you all handle runner stock, do you cut to final size up front or leave yourself room to shave?
Oh man, this reminds me of the first time my dad let me help him hang a door when I was maybe fourteen. He kept saying "measure twice, cut once" but then he'd always leave the thing a hair long and shave it down with a block plane. Took me years to figure out he was doing it on purpose. Funny how the old guys just know stuff like that without making a big speech about it.
