Man I had the exact same thing happen to me. Switched to dowels about 5 years ago after a few pocket screw joints started loosening up on a bookshelf. Now everything I build feels rock solid, even the heavy stuff like my workbench and some dining chairs I made. The alignment jig was a little tricky at first but once you get the hang of it there's really no going back.

@grant728 my buddy tried dowels last month and snapped two bits before giving up lol
