Switched from pocket screws to dowels on 40 face frames and my helper quit talking to me
Six months ago I took on a kitchen job in Portland, 40 face frames, all maple, and I made the call to ditch my Kreg jig and go back to dowels. My helper thought I was nuts, said it would take twice as long and the joints would still rack. He was right about the time part, it added about 9 hours to the build, but every frame came off the bench dead square with no creep. Pocket screws pull the joint out of alignment on hard maple way more than people admit, and I got tired of fighting it with clamps. The dowels cost me maybe $40 in material versus the screws and plugs, so the money side was close to a wash. Two of the frames got installed without any sanding at the glue line, which never happens with screws. Anyone here still running pocket screws on painted frames, or am I the only one who made the switch for good?
