Vent: The sales rep who swore by pocket screws for everything
Had a meeting two weeks ago at a supplier in Portland where this guy tried to sell me on using pocket screws for a full custom kitchen. I build inset cabinets mostly, so I know better, but he kept pushing saying it saves time and money. Got home and mocked up a door frame with his method, and the joint pulled apart after 36 hours. That whole experience made me go back to traditional mortise and tenon for anything that gets heavy use. Has anyone else had a supplier try to sell you on shortcuts that just don't hold up?

Whoa, wait. A door frame joint pulling apart in 36 hours? That's not just a shortcut, that's a straight up failure right out of the gate. I'm honestly shocked he'd even suggest that for inset work, the whole point is a tight fit that lasts. Pocket screws have their place, sure, like for quick shop jigs or maybe a temporary fixture, but for something that sees daily use and stress? That's a recipe for trouble. Your mileage will definitely vary with that stuff, but I'm with you on mortise and tenon being the real deal for heavy duty work.
