Appreciation post: the installer in Tulsa who showed me why we should never strap coax to a gas line
I was doing a triple play install in an older house near downtown Tulsa last month and the previous installer had run the coax right along the gas pipe in the basement, zip tied every two feet like it was no big deal. The homeowner had been smelling gas for a while and the utility company came out and found a tiny leak where one of the zip ties had rubbed against a fitting. I always thought the rule about keeping cable away from gas lines was just a code thing that nobody really cared about, but seeing that leak up close changed my mind fast. It turns out that vibration from the pipe plus a cheap plastic tie can wear down a fitting over time, and a lot of guys in my shop still do it because it's the fastest route through a basement. I know we all cut corners on a rough day, but this one is worth the extra 15 feet of cable and a few more staples. Has anyone else run into a situation where a shortcut from a previous tech came back to bite you on a callback?
