Hit 3,000 installs and a guy in Tulsa asked me why I still use a toner probe
Last month I did the math on my ticket count since 2011 and it came out to just over 3,000 jobs. Back then I was running RG6 by hand and swearing at brick, now half my calls are fiber to the home and the tools changed with them. A young tech in Tulsa watched me tone out a line the old way and asked why I don't just trust the meter, and I couldn't give him a good answer. Some habits stick because they saved me too many times, like that cheap probe finding a short behind drywall on a 2008 job in Broken Arrow. Do you still keep one old tool in the bag just because it has never let you down?
I read somewhere that old tools stick around because your hands remember what your brain forgets, and that cheap probe has probably paid for itself ten times over by now. Trusting the meter is fine until it lies to you once and you're pulling drywall at 9pm.
