Rant: My early days of cable installation felt more like detective work

When I began, we used paper maps and a lot of guesswork to locate cables. Today, everything is digital and precise. It's faster, but I felt more connected to the job back then. The new crew might not realize how simple things are now. I keep my old gear around as a reminder.

Funny you mention that, @hannah_knight9. My dad's old leather tool belt is like that for me. The leather is cracked and it weighs a ton, stuffed with manual drivers and a hand-crank drill. Letting a new guy try it on for size always gets a laugh.

What's the one piece of old gear you won't ever get rid of? Take it out sometimes to show the new crew what you used to work with, it really puts things in perspective for them.

That bit about showing the new crew what you used to work with hits home. I've got this old analog mixer from the early 2000s, all knobs and no presets. I pull it out during training sessions, let them feel how clunky it was to adjust levels manually. Makes them appreciate the digital boards we have now, even if they complain about the software sometimes...
