Compared cleaning a shutter curtain with q-tips versus a proper sensor swab

I was fixing a beat up Nikon F2 from a pawn shop (you know, the one with a sticky shutter?) and tried cleaning the curtain with q-tips first because I was too lazy to grab my proper kit. The q-tips left more lint than they cleaned up, and I spent an extra 20 minutes picking fibers off the curtain. Has anyone else found a weird trick that actually works better for delicate curtain cleaning?
