Dropped $220 on a Hakko soldering station and I finally get why everyone swears by them
I was using a $25 iron from the hardware store and kept lifting pads on Canon point and shoots because I couldn't control the heat. Got the Hakko FX-888D after a buddy at the shop in Denver let me try his, and now I can actually reflow ribbon cable connectors without cooking the flex. What's your go to tip for keeping heat off the plastic bits when you're working on tiny stuff like that?
Wrap a tiny bit of damp sponge around the ribbon right behind where you're soldering, it pulls heat away from the plastic before it can travel down. Sounds dumb but it works way better than kapton tape alone since tape just blocks air, it does not soak up any heat. Also turn your iron down to like 600F for flex work, you do not need 700+ on those little connectors. The pad will still flow fine if your tip is clean and tinned.
