Finally tried that Japanese solder I always thought was overhyped

Been fixing shutters for 15 years and always used the cheap stuff, but picked up some Kester 44 at a shop in Chicago last weekend. First time I didn't have to fight a joint on a sticky shutter blade, has anyone else had that kind of difference with solder brands?

The flux activity makes a huge difference. Kester 44 is a water-clean flux right? That stuff wets out way better than the older rosin cores on dirty metal. I used the same type on some stubborn electrical connectors last month and it flowed like butter. Just make sure you clean the residue off good after, it can get corrosive if left on there.

Yeah, "the flux activity makes a huge difference" - that's what got me too. I always thought solder was solder and people hyping brands were just wasting money. But after trying it on some old sticky shutter blades that normally take me twice as long, I get it now. The Kester just grabs the metal and flows where you want it without all that messing around. I had the same thought about the flux being the real hero here. It makes the job a lot less frustrating, especially when you're working on parts that have been painted over or have years of gunk on them.
