Just found out how many shutter parts are in a basic 35mm SLR

I was cleaning an old Minolta X-700 for a friend and got curious. I looked up the service manual online and counted every single piece in the shutter assembly. There are 47 separate parts. Forty seven. Just for the shutter. I always knew it was complex, but seeing the exploded diagram with all those tiny springs, gears, and levers laid out was something else. It made me respect the design a lot more, even on these common cameras. I found the manual on a site called Learn Camera Repair. Has anyone else ever taken the time to count the parts in a common repair job? It kind of changes how you see the whole machine.

Yeah, that'll do it. I had the same moment of shock taking apart an old Pentax K1000. You think it's just a box with some gears, then you're looking at a sea of tiny parts on your work mat and wondering how it ever worked in the first place. It really does make you see them as little mechanical miracles instead of just old cameras.

Ngl, that sounds like a nightmare. I'd rather just use the thing than see all the tiny bits that can go wrong.

and honestly @gavin_clark hit it right on the head there because it's not just about the parts count but more about how those tiny pieces work together perfectly for decades. like my grandpa had this old folding camera from the 50s and when i finally got around to opening it up i found these teeny springs and gears that looked like they came out of a watch. it's kind of wild how we just assume these things will work and then you see the actual mechanics and it's like oh this is basically a miracle of engineering held together with hope. makes you appreciate every single shot you take with one of those old boxes.
