My neighbor, a retired photojournalist, argued that cleaning a shutter with lighter fluid is still the best method, and I'm starting to think he's right.

After he showed me his perfectly working 1970s Nikon F2, which he's maintained that way for forty years, I realized maybe some old-school hacks have merit, so what's your most controversial but effective repair trick?

Have you tried using a wooden toothpick to gently scrape oxidation off of battery contacts? I've had good luck with that on old flash units and even a transistor radio. Just go slow and don't poke too hard, because you can strip the plating if you get aggressive. Your mileage may vary, but it's saved me a few times when contact cleaner wasn't cutting it.

Ever use a pencil eraser to clean electrical contacts? Works like a charm.

That trick saved an old game cartridge for me.
