Rant: I used to strip every camera to bare metal, now I leave the leatherette alone
For my first 6 years fixing cameras I pulled every single one down to bare chassis. Full teardown, every screw out, covers off. Did a Canonet last month and it hit me how dumb that was. Now I clean the glass, flush the shutter, swap the seals, and leave the body alone unless something is actually broke inside. Saved myself 3 hours on that Canonet alone. Reason I changed is an old guy named Pete at the shop on 9th Street in Boise watched me gut a Yashica and just said, you are making work. He was right. Less risk of losing tiny springs too. Curious if other folks here do partial teardowns or still go all the way in.
The line about how you were "making work" hits close to home, but I still pull most bodies down all the way. Reason is rust and old lube you cannot see from the outside. A Canonet with a gummed slow ring can look fine on the bench and then stick two weeks later. Doing the full strip lets me relube and find cracked gears before they come back to bite me. I get the time savings, but for anything I plan to sell or shoot hard, I would rather lose the hours than lose the camera down the road.
