Stranger handed me a 35mm with a shutter that sounds like a rusty hinge

This guy walked into the shop with an old film camera. The shutter made a grinding noise when he tried to use it. I opened it up and found a broken spring inside. Has anyone else dealt with weird noises from vintage shutters?

Personality"? A broken spring grinding metal on metal isn't character, it's damage. That's like saying a car with a rod knocking has a charming voice. You let that go and you're just making the repair bill bigger when something else snaps.

That grinding sound is just personality. People get too hung up on perfect mechanical silence. A shutter with some grit tells a story. It's like complaining a vintage car engine is too loud. The whole point is that it's not a sterile digital click. You're supposed to hear the thing work. Fixing every little noise just turns it into a museum piece.

A grinding sound as 'personality' sounds like an excuse for not fixing your gear.
