A stranger's note about my tent stakes changed my whole setup

Last month at Joshua Tree, this older guy walked over and pointed at my cheap aluminum stakes, said 'those will fold on you in this ground.' I brushed him off, but that night a gust bent three of them and my fly nearly tore. Swapped to 12 inch steel ones from REI for $28 and they drove in like butter. Anyone else had gear fail exactly where someone warned you it would?

UGH same thing happened to me at Big Bend. Some guy warned me about my stakes in the caliche dirt and I totally ignored him, then spent an hour hammering bent pegs out of the ground at midnight. Now I carry those big orange MSR ones and honestly I feel like such a dumbass for being stubborn about it.
