I finally took that guy's advice about tent stakes seriously
At a campground near Lake Tahoe last spring, some old timer told me to ditch my cheap aluminum stakes for some heavy duty ones. First big windstorm that night, my tent didn't budge while my neighbor's flew away. Has anyone else had a random stranger's gear tip turn out to be spot on?

Respectfully, I see it different @wesley83. I tried those fancy MSR stakes after a similar recommendation and they bent like pretzels in our packed clay. The cheap aluminum ones actually held up better for me. Guess it really depends on where you camp.

Did you ever ask that old timer why he swore by the heavy duty ones? In my experience those random campsite conversations are pure gold because they come from real trial and error, not some marketing pitch. I had a similar thing happen with a guy in Yosemite who wouldn't stop raving about using titanium stakes in rocky ground. I thought he was just showing off his gear until I spent a whole afternoon trying to pound in my cheap ones on a site that was basically solid granite. Switched to a set of MSR groundhogs the next season and honestly my tent has never moved an inch in wind since. Your mileage may vary depending on your soil type but that old timer definitely saved your weekend.
